Headless electric mandolin
"If M C Escher played mandolin, then I suspect he'd play this. " mandolin.org.uk forum
By far the most challenging project I have taken on to date, this unique headless electric mandolin was a custom order for Nottingham-based player, David Fowler. David and I discussed many alternative designs before settling on this unique arrangement, with its headless bolt-on neck, minimal body and unique articulated forearm rest.
The instrument is built from English woods throughout - walnut body (including curly walnut sapwood front), sycamore neck and a very nicely marbled piece of walnut heartwood for the armrest.
The purpose of the armrest and the asymmetrical body shape is to allow David to adopt the same playing technique he uses for his f-style acoustic mandolin, without risk of his right arm snagging the body-mounted tuners.
